The Blessings Of My Life

The universe is speaking to me. I’m not exactly sure what it’s saying, but whenever I feel down and out it I can hear it whispering ever so softly in my ear. If you’re a regular reader of this blog you know I’ve struggled with medical issues for well over five years now. You also know that every once in awhile I get down in the dumps over my pain.

For the most part I massage the muscles that ache, take some aspirin and consider myself lucky, but every once in awhile when the pain is bad I can’t help but feel depressed about it. The thing is… the universe never lets me wallow for long.

Every time I’m saddened by my own circumstances the universe introduces me to someone with a worse ailment than my own. Since my initial diagnosis four close friends and family members have been diagnosed with far worse disorders including kidney failure, neuroblastoma, Huntington’s disease and brain cancer. My medical condition pales in comparison to these diagnoses.

Once you’ve had an illness in your life you keep your ear out for similar stories and yesterday was no exception. A very casual conversation with my neighbor turned into a very uplifting and inspiring talk. As my neighbor shared her medical triumphs over childhood cancer and MG I couldn’t help but feel connected to her struggle. I was amazed by her strength and attitude about overcoming illness not once, but twice in her life.

She commented that these moments and heartaches of your life eventually strengthen you. If you’ve encountered a serious illness or accident you know that the old adage, “whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is actually true.

It goes without saying that you treasure life most, when you realize that it can end in an instant and you treasure the people around you most, when you know that your time with them is never guaranteed.
