Awakened

This year, when did you feel the most integrated with your body? Did you have a moment where there wasn’t mind and body, but simply a cohesive YOU, alive and present?*

I just finished reading Coming to Our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness, which discusses the need for people to reconnect with our inner spirits through mindfulness and meditation. I find myself wandering a bit lately and couldn’t have picked a better time to lift this book off the shelf. It discusses the need to truly experience the human capabilities of touch, taste, sight and sound in our every day lives.

One evening as I was reading the book in bed my husband crawled into the covers next to me. It just so happens that I had just finished reading the chapter on sound and for the first time in what feels like ages I was very tuned in to the sound of his breathing and the rustle of the covers. I could hear the wind outside and the cat’s feet thumping across the wood floor of our bedroom.

I can honestly say I can’t remember the last time I really listened for these noises and I was surprised by how soothing and comforting they were. Just for a second my mind focused on the blessings of my life and the ability to sense the comfort and love around me.

As my senses heighten so does my sense of joy and enlightenment. In that simple moment, before going to bed, I felt my body awaken to the possibilities of the world.
