Keep an open mind as to what college you attend, including private colleges. Look around to see who has the most scholarships - if your GPA or athletic ability is in demand at a certain institution, you'll earn more scholarship money. Applying for admission and aid is free, and if you have competing acceptance letters you can often request more aid from the more expensive school. It cost less for me to attend a private women's college than the local state college, mainly due to scholarships and grants (you don't have to pay back grants).

Also, every internship I had was unpaid. While they were a great learning experience, they didn't pay down my student loans. That's what my part-time retail job was for...

Thanks Kevin! Actually that's a great point. A lot of my internships provided insight into what NOT to do after college. Every time I thought I had a career path in mind my internship would completely change my mind :)

Oh Pam I totally agree with this one! We live next to a University and I am definitely considering working there when I reenter the workforce. It'll be close to home and the benefit of a paid college tuition would make up for the lower salary! Great point!

It's extremely necessary to get out of debt as soon as possible in order to avoid further financial doom. Debt is like a curse which should be got rid off at the earliest. I think planning for extra income and continuing studies alongside is a great way out to deal with debt. While extra income helps you out to pay your debt off, it strengthens your personal finance as well. Brilliantly written.

AMEN!
I lived in a tiny room in a house when I was in college and saved a ton of money on rent (the saved money went to beer money, unfortunately, but that's another story...) I really wished that I done internships, since I would have known earlier that what i was studying was not right for me...
Nice post!

My son got his undergraduate degree from the university at which I am employed, so it was free. It was not his first choice, but it was free. He got his books online and lived at home. He finished his degree in 2 1/2 years. He is now a Ph.D student at the university that was his first choice, where he received a teaching assistantship. Not only does he not pay tuition, he also receives a salary. (Ok, some of that was bragging!) Bottom line, he'll have a Ph.D at 25 and will never have to pay a penny in student loans. If you have children and have the opportunity to work at a college/university that offers tuition remission, it is well worth it to take a lower salary.
