I suppose some introverts would prefer if I didn’t strike up conversation, but the smiles tell me they are happy to chat. In fact, many of them break into a grin as soon as they look up and see me at the counter. I bet the cashiers at Aldi do the same when they look up and see you!

I know the names of my regular cashiers at Aldi, and like you, I know some things about their families (one has grandkids in Germany, one is a single dad and has a little girl) because I chat with them while they ring my groceries.

None of them has ever said, “Oh, Kristen, we really appreciate that you are friendly to us!”, so I don’t actually know how they feel about this. But I’m just operating on the assumption that most people like to be noticed and remembered.

Also, I love your thought that it’s better to do something small than nothing at all. Totally agree!
