I'm trying to get my head around your food cost. I only cook for myself, but I only spend about $160 a month on food. I don't eat much meat but I do include chicken, beef, and occasional bacon. I eat lots of veg, oats, some rice, beans, very little pasta. I eat small amounts of cheese, sour cream, and whole yogurt. Typically a dinner meal might be a stir fry. Or pinto beans with cornbread, homemade tacos made with chicken, or fried potatoes, maybe pan enchiladas or enfrijoladas, homemade soup potatoes with broccoli. Tonight was spinach with rice and barely casserole with a small bit of cheese mixed in. This weeks soup was caldo verde but I also love a good minestrone or split pea soup. Pan-fried cabbage with carrots or roasted vegetables are delicious, sprinkled with seeds or or feta. Sometimes I sprinkle nutritional yeast on top. I often make a chicken or tuna salad to eat for lunches. One large can will give me several servings on bread. A half sandwich with a cup of homemade soup is very filling. Breakfast is usually oats of some kind, or some form of eggs with a piece of toast and half an avocado. I live in the PNW and prices are much higher than the middle of the country.

You are doing great! We are a family of 8 and we homeschool as well. Try to eat at home as much as we can. Mom bakes or cooks from scratch 80% of the time still we eat out at least 4 times a week unfortunately. Mom, Dad, 6 kids ages 12,9,7,5,3,1 and we spend $2,840 a month on food alone ($1940.48/groceries and $900/fast food).

Great article and I am interested what 2023 numbers look like when they come out. I live in Seattle and food is very expensive and I am a retired single who cooks from scratch. I am on a strict budget and do not eat out. My local store has managers specials, and I am a hawk looking for them. Thanks for your research and your work.

You are doing amazing. It is me and my 3 boys, 11, 15, and 21. I spend on average $1400 a month on groceries. We eat out only once every other week and usually it's usually pizza. I shop deals, discounts, and use apps like Ibotta for extra money back.

This post made me feel better about the amount we’re spending. My husband and I have six kids, 10 down to 1-year-twins. We had a budget of $800 for groceries (including diapers, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.), but I’m having a hard time sticking to it! We try to eat healthy, fresh foods and rarely buy snack food or beverages of any kind. I cook and bake from scratch daily. I also use digital coupons and shop sales. The last few months, we’ve averaged more like $950 a month. We eat out maybe once a week (Taco Bell usually) and other than that, all meals are eaten at home, since we homeschool. Even that amount is tight for us, but I don’t know how to do much better.

I grow almost all my own produce in the garden in summer months (except garlic and onions), freeze quantities of pesto and tomato sauce for winter, make sourdough bread every other day, make granola and don't buy any pre-made food. I also make my own soymilk from dry soybeans, and don't eat meat or dairy. Soak and pressure cook dry beans to make things like hummus and soup. I only buy store brands for staples. Don't drink alcohol or sodas, do make kombucha at home. My husband and I are both athletes. The cost of things like nuts and olive oil is always surprising. Our monthly food cost is $1100 to $1200. I don't know what I could do differently to lower our food cost while continuing to eat nourishing, good quality whole foods.

I agree that the "experts" aren't experts. I am now single but unless I eat "junk" food, I spend "about" $800 a month on food.....if I don't add in the cost of cleaning supples, soap, etc. The price skyrockets when I add in the cost of everything else I need, ie, toilet paper, deodorant, shampoo, etc. etc.
