In reply to Radnor Otuxne. Seems a bit low, especially given inflation and if there is more than one person completing the job. Commercial companies noawadays do 130-140 per person per hour.

I’m an eighty year-old man living happily with my wife of fifty-one years. We have a large older home and employ an excellent house cleaner who visits to clean once each two weeks. I regularly pay $150 per visit, which takes them an hour and a half to thoroughly clean. I tip $150 only at Christmas. My cleaners are thorough and ask if I’m happy with their work. I am but now, after three years, I’m wondering if $150 is adequate.

I hire commercial cleaners too. They make 20 -30 dollars an hour in Indiana. Since they are the same cleaners that come every time. I generally do not tip for the first cleaning. If they’ve done a good job on the second cleaning, I tip 15 percent. At Christmas I tip $50 per cleaner. I always ask what they drink they prefer to drink and try to stock that for them. I always offer fresh ice water. If your first company doesn’t work out, dismiss them promptly and hire someone else.

My mom is planning to try commercial cleaning services for the first time since she broke her leg and can’t really do much cleaning herself. Now I know that you should tip cleaners more when you do services less because your house would be a lot dirtier that when it’s serviced regularly. I’d have to prepare for that when my mom books for the service this weekend.

If I were to keep my house clean, I would make sure to hire the best cleaner out there that may organize and keep my home tidy. Thank you for sharing here as well that it would be smarter to check numerous options online. I also agree with you that it would be smarter to tip the cleaners afterward.

Thanks for talking about how you should tip housecleaners when you need a deep house clean. I can see that doing this can help them be motivated to come back and do the best work they can. I’m thinking about finding someone to help me keep my house cleaned, so I wanted to learn more about it.

I agree that Christmas bonuses are great for housekeepers. Maybe I can find some housekeepers that work hard. That way I feel like a bouns is justified.

I’m really aghast at reading some of these replies & heartened by others. In the US always tip on service. Always. Because unless it’s owner-operated-serviced, there’s a huge chance the employee doing the work is not getting paid enough. Also, think about your cleaning cost in terms of what you would tip on that restaurant meal. Sure, the server might share the tip with the busser, bartender, etc. But had any of them cleaned your toilet? Dusted the picture frame of your grandmother with care? Tip every time! You probably never know if it’s always the same or people temping when your regular is out sick or rotates. In the age of Uber Eats & such, don’t tip them equivalent to who you clean the kitchen counters you set the food upon. I’ve been googling bc wondering if 23% was enough each time (the base price is a bit higher than I feel is right, but I like them overall). Good lawd, I feel I should find a way to afford to tip more for those who don’t tip enough! And if you tip once your hair dresser more per 3 mos than you do your housecleaner who comes every week or two, shame on you.

You made a very good point that just because a cleaner is from a Big company, he gets a lot in wages. This is the harsh reality for most of the big companies. Any tipping amount should make the cleaner person happy and it mostly depends on your ability.
