I tracked my money for a year or so (still do to some extend) and found it very useful, though I use my debit card for almost everything and rarely ever have cash so it wasn’t/isn’t all that difficult to do.

As for the tracking every penny think, I think it is a great idea. By doing that on my site I have already prevented myself from several purchases that I otherwise would have likely made.
