In reply to Matthew. @Matthew, Can you say you're taking off work for a while? A friend of mine has been using this line instead of saying they retired. You never know if you'll go back to work in some capacity, so she feels like it's not a lie.

Hello,
I’ve got a problem about replying to people’s questions about what I do. I’m too young to say that I’m retired. Retired from what? What did you do to be retired before 55? I say that I’m and administrator for some investments and trusts. People what to know the inside money investing secretes. I say it’s for others and not myself. Who are my clients then? I then say that they prefer that I don’t tell. By now the story is getting too complicated. I just want a job title and a good cover story that doesn’t bring on too many questions. I don’t want to tell people how much I’ve got. Where I got it from and why, at 55, I don’t have to work anymore. I am a middle aged backpacker who does fly first class, stay in hostel dorms, sit on over night buses and goes to the opera.

We’ve been diy remodeling our house one room at a time for years. But we haven’t done anything to the outside of the house. Stealth wealth in this case is just the order that we choose to work on our home. It has the added benefit of keeping the assessor from knowing how much nicer the inside is.

Practising a full-on stealth wealth can also lead to devoid oneself of the joy of spending. I think it is better to strike a balance between the two and do indulge in some spending once every few months.

It’s amazing to me that people hide the fact that they’re worth millions. I live in an apartment building and just found out through the grapevine that the woman who lives next to me is massively rich. Her car is old, and her apartment is smaller than mine. I don’t understand living life as if you’re working or middle class when you’re anything but that. If I was rich I’d buy a big house and have a nicer car. I’d buy all the guitars and musical equipment I wanted, and would have a music studio in my home. I’d buy expensive clothes, and have a maid. The reason you folks don’t want us to know you are rich af is because you’re afraid we’ll ask you for money. And I would. I’d ask for a mere $100,000 to make my retirement easier, rather than working my whole life with little to show for it. You correctly assume that people like me resent your stealth. Maybe if you shared the wealth you’d feel better!

I do feel funny about telling people I work from home when I don’t. Still, I feel this has saved me many headaches. I’m not a rich early retiree, I work from home. It has saved me from a few of the issues your other commenters have mentioned. Otherwise, I only speak the truth.
