Clever Dude --

I couldn't agree with you more. One of the best things I ever did was interview for jobs outside of the company. What I found convinced me to stay with my current employer.

But I think you've hit the nail on the head. Although my salary has increased tremendously and my benefits are well above par, I feel my skills are beginning to tumble.

I guess it's difficult to find a job that pays well, provides plush benefits, and strengthens your skills.

Thanks for the comment.

I understand your feelings about staying with an employer who treats you well. I wanted to stay with my first post-college employer, and I was there for 4 years, but morale was sinking due to pending layoffs. I had worked for, well, the most profitable company in the world, yet every year, sometimes twice, we'd get called in by the head honcho with news of a 5% layoff.

I left after 4 years, but I look back wishing I had those benefits now (especially the adoption and education ones). However, I think by this time next year, I will have doubled my salary since I graduated just 6 years ago. I've also advanced quite considerably in my field since leaving that employer.

I congratulate you on your loyalty. However, always be on the lookout for better opportunities. Sometimes, they're better overall, and other times they just make you have a whole new appreciation for your current job.
