Bought My Grandmother’s Toyota

February 6, 2007 by One Frugal Girl 2 Comments

So my husband and I decided to buy my grandmother’s car after all. Despite the fact that we don’t need the car just yet, we decided the deal was just to good to pass up. For $6300 we purchased a 1999 Toyota Camry with a little over 50,000 miles.

In a comment, DM suggested we sell my old car for a few hundred dollars. But since we don’t have collision or comprehensive insurance on the old one, I think we’ll just keep all three for now. My husband and I plan to car share for awhile, driving the Toyota on the days we take long distance trips to work.

Congrats on the new ride. I’m sure it’ll treat you well. I’d like to clarify my suggestion about selling your other car. I mentioned that my van brought me $800. However, from your description, your car is likely to bring more than that.
I’m curious why you’d keep paying insurance on the old car if you don’t intend to drive it. Enjoy the Camry.

The Olds is still insured… it just doesn’t have comprehensive or collision on it, since it’s worth less than $1000. I’m going to call my insurance company tomorrow, to find out how much more I’ll have to pay to insure a third car. Unless it’s completely unreasonable we’ll continue to drive and maintain all three.
