Book Review: The Goose on the Roof

Book Description:

When one little girl tries to solve a big problem involving a goose on her roof, she enlists the help of her animal friends. Despite her best efforts, things don’t go as planned, and she ends up with additional challenges to navigate as well.

The Goose on the Roof features rhymes, animal characters, and a theme of problem-solving. The order of the characters can serve as a memory game as the story builds up and unwinds.

Children may also be encouraged to come up with their own ideas for how to solve the issue of the honking goose on the roof and the predicaments created by the other animals. Winner (1st place) of the 2020 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards in the animals/pets category (ebook), this children’s story highlights animals in a wholesome and engaging way.

My Review:

The Goose on the Roof is a very sweet story about a little girl who finds a honking goose on her roof. She elicits the help of other animals, but some of those creatures get into trouble of their own.

I read this story to my five-year-old son, who absolutely adored the images and asked me to pause on each page so he could look over the scenes. When we were finished reading, he turned to the first page so we could start again.

As a parent, I appreciate the book’s focus on problem-solving. How can this little girl get the goose off of her roof? What options does she have, and what does she attempt to do?

When the book was finished, my five-year-old and I discussed other options she could have considered. He suggested sending a bunch of birds up to see what was going on. “Maybe they could help because they could easily fly up there,” he said.
