I checked out the rates at a Best Western hotel where we’re staying tomorrow night after my husband’s employer sponsored Christmas party. The best rate I could find was $98 for the night, but I figured I’d call the 1-800 number and see if the hotel chain could offer anything better. Sure enough a three minute call to customer service reduced the rate by $10.

We’ve also had good luck asking for AAA rates, local resident rates and any other discounts.
Once my mom booked a room online at a so-called discount site and discovered a cheaper rate at the front desk. It never hurts to ask. My parents also ask for AARP discounts.
