Celebrating Another Anniversary

My husband is not the best at celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, but the remaining days of the year he is the most caring and sweet man to bless this earth. Honestly I don’t think he sees any reason to focus on a special day. I also think he feels pressured to choose the perfect activity, the perfect gift, and the perfect meal.

I always tell him it’s just the thought that counts and I certainly don’t need expensive gifts, but nevertheless he seems to dread special occasions. This year I wrote an instruction manual for my birthday and in retrospect I should have written a similar manual for our anniversary, because when he woke up I could sense that familiar trepidation.

So I took the day by the reigns and planned our activities. A good friend gave my husband a gift certificate to a tiny, upscale restaurant back in January. We intended to make our way up there for months, but never seemed to find the time to make the trip. Today seemed like the perfect day for a drive so we took a leisurely 40 minute trip north and ended up at an adorable little restaurant where we dined on sliders and pizza and the most decadent creme brulee with chocolate ganache I’ve ever eaten in my life.

We drove to the hardware store after lunch and purchased a fire pit for our backyard patio. If the rain hadn’t come I’m sure we would’ve spent the evening roasting s’mores, but as the weather pressed on we moved the festivities inside and stacked wood in our indoor fireplace.

We spent the evening preparing vodka cream sauce for dinner and tikka masala for this week’s lunches. There is no place I’d rather be than cutting up vegetables and stirring delicious sauces beside my husband. It’s one area of our lives that has truly blossomed since our marriage six years ago.

I can’t imagine a world without my husband. Happy anniversary! What a perfect way to celebrate it.

Happy anniversary! My husband and I have stopped giving each other gifts for anniversaries. Instead, we do stuff together. Our anniversary was just a few weeks ago, and my husband found a Segway tour of downtown Raleigh (that was amazingly fun!), followed by a cheap dinner and some drinks at a dueling piano bar. The next day, we took in a UNC-Chapel Hill football game. It was great fun and we have memories that we'll enjoy longer than anything else we could have gotten each other!
