I’m Not Usually Obsessed With Things

Money Smart Life asked a group of ladies, including myself, for a list of items we obsess about. I have to admit that I’m not usually the obsessive type. I read Money Smart Life’s article on America’s obsession with money, and I can definitely say that this is one area of my life in which I do not obsess. I am entertained by articles and blogs about money. I feel a small thrill whenever I save money or watch the numbers in my bank account grow, but I realize that money is a means to a greater end, not an end in and of itself.

My biggest obsession these days is with my health. For the past two years I have experienced aches, pains, hospital stays, and surgeries that I never would have expected to encounter at 27, 28, and 29 years of age. I have turned to alternative therapies and medicines and have become intrigued by and experimented with the natural remedies to health problems. Although I don’t always do everything I should, I also try to meditate, count my blessings, envision the good in people, and recognize the joyful moments in each and every day. It’s not exactly an obsession, more a desire to live a portion of each day, (the non-working portion), the way it was meant to be lived, in an open-hearted way. Of course, some days this works better than others.

A lot of friends my age are rushing towards the next stage of life. Rushing to get married, to have children, to move into a larger house, to own more then they currently own… They fail to enjoy the boyfriend who will become their husband, the time they have with their husband prior to children, the children they already have, the house they currently live in, and the things they already own. I guess my obsession would be in trying to see the good in each day. Rather than obsessing about things that don’t matter I try to spend my energy concentrating on the things that do.
