One Frugal Girl’s Three Year Blog Anniversary

Today marks the three year blog anniversary of One Frugal Girl. This blog actually came into creation at a very dark time in my life. In March of 2006 I was stuck at home recovering from a very intense surgery. For months prior to that surgery I had been in and out of doctor’s offices and emergency rooms in search of a diagnosis for an unknown medical condition. At the time I was sick, tired and in retrospect, undeniably depressed.

One afternoon, three months into my recovery, I began to write my thoughts on a standard piece of notebook paper. I wasn’t writing about anything specific or important, I just wanted to dump the thoughts out of my brain. I wanted to write and reread and ponder them. I quickly realized that I could type much faster than I could put a pen to paper, so I put down the pen and opened a text editor on my computer. I remember stopping on multiple occasions because my hand kept cramping.

After I finished, I saved the document to my computer and began searching the Internet for similar medical stories. I didn’t need to find someone with the same medical condition, but I did want to find someone that was experiencing, or had experienced, a similar medical mystery.

From time to time throughout my Internet search I stumbled across personal medical blogs. I found comfort in reading other people’s stories and decided to create a blog of my own. My very first entry was written on December 20, 2005.

About a month or so after I began writing I received my very first comment. I was thrilled that someone had read my blog. I immediately clicked on the blogger’s profile and found that the commenter’s blog focused on personal finance. In that instant a light went off in my brain.

I began One Frugal Girl with an interest in personal finance and a need to distract myself from physical pain. I started One Frugal Girl for myself, just as a simple means to type up my thoughts and send them out to the world. I never dreamed that three years later I’d have 500+ subscribers and regular readers and commenters who feel like long distance friends.
