First Mother’s Day

Did you do anything special to celebrate your first mother’s day? My little one was born last October and this holiday has suddenly taken on a whole new meaning for me. I don’t want to spend a lot of money or buy anything unnecessary, but I would like to find a special way to celebrate this day.

For the time being I am a stay-at-home mom so I guess you could say every day is mother’s day for me. I could not be more thankful or grateful to spend time with my beautiful baby boy.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has ideas on how I should celebrate this momentous occasion. I already started a blog for my son and began writing letters to him, so I’m looking for something else I can do to commemorate this day.

Over seven years ago I left the hospital with a blood clot in my lung and absolutely no idea of what was going on in my body. For weeks after that incident I walked around my neighborhood trying to heal. I remember one day in particular I prayed to God that I would get better and that whatever was wrong with me would not prevent me from having children.

While my main goal was to lead a healthy, happy life I also knew in my heart of hearts that I wanted a child. I cannot believe that I am now the mother of a happy, healthy, beautiful baby boy. I pray for him every day and thank God for bringing him into my world.

  1. A Mommy/baby photo shoot sounds great. You can return the favor by shooting Daddy/baby on Father’s Day. Great way to capture your first Mother’s Day. Also, lots of snuggling!

  2. Daddy/Grandpa should take over for the day! After serving you breakfast in bed, he/they should take off with the kiddo for the day, and let you rest and relax doing whatever you want. 🙂

    • I did ask the hubby to take the early morning shift, but after that’s over I want to spend the rest of the day hanging out with both my husband and my little one. I’ll ask for a day of reprieve at some point, but probably not on mother’s day 🙂

  3. For my first monther’s day we planted a weeping cherry tree in our yard. It’s so fun to watch how much it grows and we take a picture in front of it every year. It’s very special to me. Of course I joke how expensive it’s going to be to bring it with us if we every move from our home! :o)

  4. Our first mothers day was last year, when our little boy was only six weeks old. My wife is a stay-at-home mom as well. We thought about going out to dinner, but didn’t want to leave our little baby behind. After all, he was the reason we were celebrating our first mothers day. So we ordered Applebees carside to go, and had a nice meal while listening to the music from our little baby’s bouncer. It wasn’t anything fancy or expensive, but that’s one of our fondest memories of his first year with us.

  5. I’m a little late, but I wanted to tell you my first Mother’s Day story — it was only last year. Last Mother’s Day, my daughter was only 2 months ago, and my husband and I planned a nice picnic outing at a local winery. All the food and baby gear was packed up, and we were only on the road for 5 minutes when I remembered that I didn’t change the baby’s diper before we left the house. We stopped at my parent’s house to change the diaper (it’s on the way to the winery) and, of course, the baby started crying, and I fetl overwhelmed.

We ended up taking a blanket from my parent’s house out to their backyard and having our picnic there. My mom was a little surprised to see us there when she got home, but it was a very nice day. I was very tense whenever I took the baby out when she was that little, so it was probably better anyway. (I still hate changing diapers in public restrooms — there just isn’t enought space — so that wasn’t the last time I stopped at my parents’ for s surprise diaper change)

    • Thanks for the comment Lauren. I love the idea of having a picnic in your own (or in your case your parent’s backyard). Thanks for sharing your story. By the way I’m with you on public bathrooms. Why don’t more of them have changing stations? My husband and I often resort to changing him in our car. It’s a tiny, 1999 Toyota Camry so that’s not always easy either!

  6. I began to Google “first mother’s day” and came across your page. I enjoyed reading your post as my baby boy was also born last October and I haven’t yet put much thought into what to do for a first mother’s day. I’m still not sure what I’m going to do, probably going to give my husband the challenge of planning, but your post reminded me that this is a special day for a first time mom and now I want to be sure I make an effort to make it memorable. Thank you.

  7. I too am celebrating my first mother’s day! My baby girl was born in January, she just turned 4 months and I have put some thought into how I wanted to spend this day with her. I am a single mother working full time so I wanted to make sure I took the day off to spend the whole day focusing on just me and her and nothing else. You are lucky to be able to stay home with your son. I cherish the moments that I have with my daughter as my time with her is limited. I wanted to commemorate this mother’s day by making handprints of our hands and hope to make this something we do every year. Hope your have a wonderful Mother’s Day no matter how you commemorate it it’ll be special.
