Am I Too Trusting?

On January 31st I sold two sets of basketball tickets to two brothers from Baltimore. When the brothers arrived to pick up the tickets one of the brothers immediately paid me in cash for one set of tickets. The other brother reached in his pocket, then hesitated and asked if he could send me a check for the other two tickets later in the week.

I really wanted to get paid for both sets of tickets that day, but I ultimately agreed that I could wait for his check to arrive. As a sign of good faith I handed over both sets of tickets. I waited a full week for the check, but it never came. I contacted the second brother and asked when he mailed the check. He told me he hadn’t mailed it yet. Then he asked if I could wait a few more days to be paid.

Again I begrudgingly agreed to wait and even suggested that he pay me on the day of the game, but as time passes I am now beginning to wonder if I will ever be paid.

  1. It’s entirely possible you got scammed. Personally, I wouldn’t part with the tickets without cash in hand. But since you have info to contact him, you may eventually get your money. I hope you do.

  2. I’m so paranoid that when I spent $800 on 4 OU football tickets, I took a picture of the woman holding the tickets (I was afraid they may have been counterfeits). Then I also wrote down her name and address off of her driver’s license.

But it was $800, so I felt justified.

  3. I can’t imagine he’d send you a check and if he actually does I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t bounce!
    That’s really unfortunate.

  4. Craigslist? It’s full of scammers. No money, no ticket. Ruthlessness in ticket sales is ok.

One of my regular ticket buyers still owes me a check for tickets I sent her a month ago. (The game is next week.) I wonder if her check will show up before the game.

  5. Don’t sell anything to anyone without cash or a cashier’s check. Yes, you are way too trusting and you only got paid for two tickets and that will be all of it. Report this to your local police do not wait any longer. Trust me!

  6. Ugh, I once took a check from someone on craigslist that ‘forgot’ her purse somewhere–made me wait ten minutes while I watched her ‘search’ her car. It was only $50, she had two of her little kids with her, and was sick and pregnant to boot (don’t know why, but the fact that she was a mother and creating new life made her more credible to me). JUST THIS ONCE, I thought, I’ll trust a stranger. I’ll give someone a break…

Her check bounced. She never called me back when I followed up.

But I learned my lesson: cash ONLY.

I hope these people have a conscience and give you your money. Honestly, I don’t know how people that pull that kind of thing live with themselves! I hate owing money and pay it off asap–I even pay my rent early! Good luck.

  7. Wow you all think I’ve been scammed. I sure hope not. Those are some awful stories. I’ll find out for sure by tomorrow afternoon. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the buyers will turn out to be honest men.

  8. Sorry, you may been scammed. That sucks, but lesson learned. I stick to cash for those kinds of things. I sold a used car thru auto trader, cash only. Hopefully the guy will come through, I try to stay an optimist.
